Local PNC Students Earn Chancellor's Leadership Awards PDF Print E-mail

WESTVILLE - Purdue University North Central Chancellor James B. Dworkin has announced the winners of the 2008-2009 Chancellor's Leadership Award.


 The students selected for the honor join a distinguished group of students who have a record of academic achievement and demonstrated leadership through involvement in school and community activities.
PNC Chancellor James Dworkin stated, "I am pleased that we can offer students this opportunity to enhance their leadership qualities. This effort will transfer into our local communities as our students graduate and assume leadership positions in their chosen fields of work."
 Award criteria include school and community involvement and leadership, scholastic achievement and potential for participation and leadership in PNC extracurricular activities. Students earning leadership awards represent high schools throughout Northwest Indiana and were involved in a variety of clubs, activities, community and church organizations and sports.
 The Chancellor's Leadership Award is a renewable scholarship program that requires participation in an on-campus leadership seminar and volunteer service, among other requirements.  Several of the scholarships are sponsored through endowment funds created by local businesses and individuals.
 Students earning the awards are:

Kimberly Kacafirek - A North Judson-San Pierre High School 2008 graduate, Kacafirek will major in Biology.  She was in swimming, volleyball and track and was a member of the Class Cabinet, German Club and Future Farmers of America. She is a 4-H Junior Leader, serving as secretary and vice president, and in the horse, pony and dog clubs. 

Gideon Avornu - He is an international student from Ghana. He was a high school exchange student at Washington Township and was involved in sports and academic teams. He is a continuing PNC student who is a pre-med major and is employed at PNC. He is a member of the PNC strategic planning committee on globalization. 
 
Anna Boller - She is a 2008 graduate of Michigan City High School. Her high school activities include honor societies and clubs reflecting her interest in art, drama and music.  She was captain of her cheerleading squad.   Robert Braddy - Braddy is a 2008 graduate of Michigan City High School. He was involved in sports and earned all state honorable mention in cross country in 2007.  He was involved with the Japanese Club, pep band, and the ping pong club.  He also awarded the Eagle Scout Bronze Palm and is an assistant scoutmaster. 

Sean Casey - He is a Hebron High School 2008 graduate who played baseball and soccer and was on  the Student Council, the National Honor Society and Spanish and Drama clubs. He has participated in a local Habitat for Humanity building project.
 
Joy Collmar - She is a continuing PNC student, majoring in Elementary Education. She is a licensed foster parent, a Sunday school teacher, American Sign Language Club member and a member of the PNC TRIO Club. She helped organize an event on campus that encouraged reading and literacy for local youngsters.

Celia Corona - She is a 2008 Plymouth High School graduate who intends to major In Elementary Education. Her high school activities included cheerleading, track and field, Spanish Club and the Heart Club.  

Penny Filipidis - She is a 2008 graduate of Valparaiso High School where she was a member of the Key Club. She also volunteered in a Special Needs preschool classroom.
 
Karissa Inglis - She is a 2008 graduate of Lake Central High School. She intends to major in Elementary Education and will play softball for PNC. She has lived in New York and Virginia. In high school, she played softball in high school and was in orchestra. She is active in church activities.

Shawn Martin - A continuing PNC student, Martin transferred from Kalamazoo Valley Community College to pursue a degree in Business. He will play basketball for PNC in the fall. He has mentored children in second grade and has assisted in basketball camps. He also volunteers to help the elderly and those in need.

Alyssa Miller - Miller is a 2008 Hobart High School graduate where she ran cross country and track. She was in Key Club, National Honor Society, Booster Club and the prom committee. 

David Myers - A Kankakee Valley High School 2008 graduate, he will major in Elementary Education. His activities included Drama Club, band, Student Council, Students Against Drunk Driving, Foreign Language Club, Super Student Sidekick and the Kougar Krazies. He is a Wheatfield volunteer firefighter and active in his church. 
 
Salena Senevonghacak - She is a 2008 Westville High School graduate  majoring in Behavioral Sciences.  She was in track, volleyball, basketball and cheerleading and volunteered for a number of community service projects.
 
Megan Staroscsak - A Highland High School 2008 graduate, Staroscsak will play volleyball for PNC and pursuing a Nursing degree. She was in volleyball, basketball, National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, Spanish Club, Student Council and was freshman class president. She volunteers in the community and works with the Highland Parks department. 
 
Joseph Stonebraker - He is a 2008 graduate of Coloma High School, Watervliet, Mich. He will major in English and play basketball for PNC. His activities include tennis, football and basketball. He was a student tutor and vice president of Future Teachers of America.
 
Rebecca Tucker - She is a 2008 graduate of Wheeler High School who will major in business. She was a member of Drama Club, Show Choir, choir and the Academic Super Bowl team. She is involved in 4-H and was an officer, a leader and mentor for younger students. 
 
Emily Turner - A 2008 graduate of Hobart High School, Turner is a pre-dentistry major. She was a member of the basketball team and in the National Honor Society. She volunteers for the parks department and at a senior citizen's home. 
 
Lindsey White - She is a South Central High School 2008 graduate and will major in Business. She played volleyball, basketball and was in Key Club, National Honor Society, Student Senate, 4-H and yearbook. Her community involvement includes Relay for Life, Salvation Army and Big Brother/Big Sisters.
 
Fawn Wright - A 2008 Portage High School graduate majoring in Business, she played soccer and was in National Honor Society. She also plays the violin. 
 
Caitlin Young - A 2008 graduate of Washington Township High School, majoring in Behavioral Sciences. Young has been in activities ranging from art club to pompon squad and was in high school committees and clubs.
