Monticello is still a city in mourning today, following the bus crash that took the lives of 4 young riders on Friday. The children died when their bus was struck by two dump rucks after one f the rucks swerved to avoid running over a mo-ped that had slowed to make a turn into a driveway. All 4 students and the driver were wearing seatbelts, as required of all special needs buses.
Democrats have decided to allow a quarter century ban on drilling for oil off the Atlantic Pacific coasts to expire next week. President George Bush had lifted an executive ban on offshore drilling in July. Luke Puckett, Republican candidate for the 2nd district congressional seat in Indiana told Ed Hasnerl that he thinks the drilling is a good idea. Puckett is running against incumbent Democrat Joe Donnelly who earlier told Ed that he too favors lifting the ban on drilling.
Starke County Chamber of Commerce is announcing a “Meet the Candidates” night to be held on October 8th. Besides the local candidates, Anthony Manning announces that State Senator Ed Charbonneau and his Democrat opponent Larry Balmer will be in attendance, as will State Representative Nancy and her republican opponent Mark McKillop.
