 Starke County Sheriff Oscar Cowen
Oscar Cowen, Sheriff of Starke County, will answer questions on subjects ranging from safety in the home to crime prevention. The Sheriff will also share tips on how to avoid scams and protect your identity.
The public is invited to attend. Senior citizens wishing to come for lunch at noon may do so by calling before March 28, 2008 to reserve a meal. A $1.50 donation is requested for the meal.
Senior citizens were surveyed about a year ago to see what their concerns were in the area of safety. Generally speaking, older individuals have higher levels of trust with regard to strangers, telephone salespersons, contractors, workers, officials and others they deal with. They therefore become an easier target for home invasion, fraudulent home repairs, identity theft and other crimes directed towards seniors.
To help address these issues, Starke County Triad was formed. Triad is an association of three – law enforcement, senior citizens, and social service agencies – dedicated to the well being of seniors. The idea of Triad was implemented in 1988 when representatives from AARP, the International Association of Chiefs of Police, and the National Sheriffs Association came together and agreed to partner to reduce crime against the elderly.
